Learn a set of skills that can pave your way to a new career. Whether working in the in-demand world of commercial interior or upholstery sewing, or setting yourself up to start your own alterations enterprise, this course will set you in motion!
Classes will be held weekly at the Checkered Tulip Studio in Pittsboro, every Tuesday beginning January 14th and go through April 15th, with daytime and evening options available.

Unit I - Intro to Sew
Learn to use your machine. Master how to maintain and thread the machine and bobbin, and the concept of adjusting thread tension for different fabrics. Learn to use different stitches, stitch lengths, and machine needles and feet. Sew a small pillow for this unit project.
Unit II - Intro to Apparel - Make Lounge Pants
Make a pair of relaxed fit, side seam lounge pants with pockets and mock tie front. Learn to sew with light to medium weight fabrics, and learn to read a pattern, sewing terms, proper cutting, seam finishes, button hole, elasticized waistband, hemming, and how to properly take body measurements.
Unit III - Intro to Interior Sewing
Learn the basics on cutting & sewing drapes, cushions, slip covers. Project: make a slip cover for an ottoman. This very in-demand skill will prepare you for doing basic interior sewing.
Unit IV - Zipper Installation
Learn all the hacks and tricks to start adding zippers to your projects like bags, pillows, dresses, etc.
You’ll learn four zipper applications:
– Invisible zippers
– Centered zippers
– Lapped zippers
– cushion zipper
Unit V - Sewing with Knits & Using Serger
Introductory serger course: learn how to thread and change needles (decifer proper stretch needle. Practice how to achieve proper tension, cutting knit/stretch fabrics, learn different weights of knits, sew a circle, rolled edge, corners and a beginner project. Serging offers a clean professional finish, saves time, sews faster and easier.
Unit VI - Alterations
In this unit you’ll learn basic alteration practices: hem pants, jeans, circle skirts, dress and sleeves. Learn to take in or let out sides seams and add darts. Use other learned skills to replace a zipper, patch a hole, adjust a neckline,shape seat, and sew buttons.
Unit VII - Intro to Commercial Sewing
Learn how to sew on a commercial industrial sewing machine. Learn how to thread machine, thread bobbin, maintain tension, discuss heavier threads, construct a small welted cushion, make and apply welt cord, zippered closure.
Unit VIII - Apparel Project - Sew a Light Bomber Jacket
Apply your skills learned such as pattern reading, cutting, stitching, serging, and zipper installation. Cut & sew this classic design and learn some advanced sewing skills. this Bomber is relaxed fit with ribbing at the neckline, cuffs and waist, with an exposed center zipper, welt pockets, and full lining.
